Very high optical performance even wide open: strong control of chromatic aberration, sagittal coma flare, distortion; very good sharpness from center to edges.
Compact & lighter than its predecessor: about 30% lighter and 20% shorter than the earlier version.
Dual HLA (High-response Linear Actuator) autofocus system: fast, precise, quiet. Better for both stills and video, with reduced focus breathing.
Includes useful physical controls: aperture ring (click-/declick-capable), aperture ring lock, focus mode switch, AFL (focus hold) button. Helps with video work and fast operation.
Weather-sealed/dust & splash resistant construction; water-/oil-repellent coating on front element. More resilient for outdoor and challenging conditions.
